Evidence That Vitamin D Supplementation Could Reduce Risk of Influenza and COVID-19 Infections and Deaths

As COVID-19 spreads, taking care of one’s respiratory health is critical. This article reviews the role of vitamin D in reducing the risk of respiratory tract infections, and highlights how vitamin D supplementation might be a useful measure to reduce COVID-19 risk. Vitamin D can reduce risk of infections by inducing cathelicidins and defensins that can lower viral replication rates and by reducing concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines that produce the inflammation that injures the lining of the lungs, leading to pneumonia. This is a useful resource to understand the link between respiratory health and Vitamin D and its implications for COVID-19.
