India’s COVID Vaccine Supply Side Status: An Overview by BCG

December 2, 2021

India had, by mid-May, completely vaccinated only 5% of its adult population and only 3.33% of the total population. India started its vaccination program in January, from 0.2 million doses a day and peaked in April at 4.3 million doses a day. Currently, the daily figure is close to 1.8 million doses, even as the program opened for everyone above the age of 18, significantly raising demand. The distribution of vaccinations among states is not uniform. Of the bigger states, Gujarat, Delhi, and Kerala are performing relatively better, while Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra are lagging behind. It is estimated that India will have to administer at least 10 million doses daily to be able to vaccinate a critical mass (~70%) of its population by November. Therefore, the need right now is to increase India’s vaccination efforts multiple times over.
