In its efforts to empower vulnerable communities and make them more resilient, #COVIDActionCollab (CAC) has partnered with a diverse set of organizations since its inception. One of its partner organizations, Grameen Foundation India (GFI), specializes in creating and implementing several innovative programs for low-income and marginalized communities. It strives relentlessly to empower rural women with adequate resources to improve the lives of larger communities by providing them access to finance, livelihood opportunities, health, and nutrition. The partnership with  #COVIDActionCollab enables GFI to further its vision by reaching more individuals from the communities through a network of women agents.

It is through this partnership that Grameen Foundation India has developed a module for the vaccination readiness program in their proprietary application called Grameen Mittra Connect (GMC app). A one-stop solution for the Grameen Mittras or ‘Friends of the village’, the app enables these agents of change to carry out activities related to vaccination awareness along with providing access to several government services, banking, and financial services to the members of the communities they belong to.

VaxNow

Accelerating vaccinations for millions of vulnerable people across India

VaxNow is bringing together the Government, Private Sector Organizations, Community leaders, NGOs and the Media to accelerate the vaccination of vulnerable people in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Bihar. These partners will collaborate to reach the unreached through an agile, geographically contextualized plan which will help overcome barriers for vulnerable communities. The criteria for selecting these communities is: people with the highest access barriers, the highest chance of contracting COVID and people living in overcrowded places.

To equip the Grameen Mittras with the necessary skills to undertake activities related to the vaccination readiness program, several training sessions were conducted by #COVIDActionCollab amid the pandemic. During the third wave of the pandemic that hit the country at the beginning of this year, the Mittras and their supervisors were also given refresher training by #COVIDActionCollab to ensure that the community members come forward to get vaccinated. One of the main challenges faced by CAC and GFI during this period was to address the misinformation regarding vaccination. In order to address this, the Mittras were also trained to reach out to the community members with the help of relevant videos, pamphlets, etc. Additionally, the Mittras were given one-on-one training on how to use the GMC app and how to enroll community members for availing of several financial and non-financial services.
